The Secret to Better Paintings Has Nothing to Do With Paint

Painters want to paint…so it makes sense that we’re captivated by things like loose brushwork and vibrant color.

But the reality is, paintings live or die by their composition. Brushwork and color only matter once the composition is in place.

And composition is not something about the rule of thirds or having a center of interest. Nor is it something you tack on half way through your painting.

Paintings rest on a foundation of strong composition — just as when you build a house you put in the foundation first.

You can of course paint without much thought to composition, hoping it will somehow “arrive” in the process of painting.

But this is a low percentage strategy for success.

Composition Is the Missing Link for Most Painters

I started going on painting trips with my father and his professional artist friends from the time I was 11.

I’ve spent thousands and thousands of hours learning to craft paintings with strong compositions, thinking about compositions, studying the best painters of all time and how they structured compositions.

And I have spent hundreds and hundreds of hours teaching composition to students on workshops, refining and expanding on what actually works and why.

I was fortunate to learn the importance of composition early in life, which means I’ve had decades of practice learning to compose striking paintings.

But not everyone gets that level of exposure to this idea of compositional structure. I was lucky I’d say.

Fifteen years ago North Light Books sent a questionnaire to their over 300,000 members asking what they most wanted to have instruction on. And composition was the number one answer.

As it happens I had sold North Light a video called Mastering Composition for their video club a few years before that. And so they asked me to write a book call Mastering Composition.

That book has now sold over 50,000 copies and is still going strong. It is used by art teachers all over the country. It is in the recommended reading lists at the end of many art instruction books.

The success of that book showed me painters were crying out for more practice on composition. And so for years, I taught workshops.

I taught them in Provence every year for 20 years. I taught in Tuscany, Lake Como, Taos and Maine. Beautiful places with wonderful students.

I made composition the centerpiece of those workshops. I knew that composition was the key to helping students improve dramatically.
So I used every trick in my toolbox to help them develop the ability to “see” in terms of composition…and to translate that vision onto their canvas.

I love teaching those workshops…

But in 2019 I Quit Anyway

See, I found that after a couple of days, students just couldn’t integrate and assimilate any more knowledge.

They painted and they enjoyed the camaraderie of being with other artists. But they reached a learning threshold pretty quickly.

They simply couldn’t integrate what they were learning fast enough to really change how they saw their subjects… and how they translated that seeing onto their canvases.

So I stopped offering workshops. And I started experimenting with other ways of teaching composition.


In 2019 I developed and tested a pilot course for a new online training.

I discovered the right amount of practice …done in just the right way… could actually rewire a person’s brain and how they see. This is about activating the right brain.

And it didn’t take very long! Within a month, students had so deeply integrated the principles of composition that they began seeing the world, and their own painting in terms of shapes and value masses and depth.

And the quality of their work just exploded. I’ll show some examples in a moment.

So how did they get such impressive results, in so short a time? We stripped the whole painting process down to basics.

It is very hard to improve in a foundational way when 95% of your attention remains focused on other complications, like: what am I going to paint, is it a good idea, is my drawing any good, what color should that be, shouldn’t that shape maybe be bigger, or darker, I can’t seem to get the paint to go on the way I want, and on and on and on.

And the point of these drawings is to have an efficient way to think about an image visually before you start to paint.

This drawing would not go far in helping you translate the scene into paint.

But this drawing, by the same student, from two weeks later, is different. Now you can see the individual shapes of bushes and trees. You can see where they sit in space, where they overlap, where the lights and shadows are.

The drawing may not be a masterpiece but now the artist has a clear sense of how to turn this drawing into a painting.

And their chances of success now compared to using the first drawing, is dramatic.

With the eye being pulled over to the left at the end of the road and everything else supporting that movement. There’s no distracting elements. Everything supports the compositional idea.

Here is a blunt truth:
if you can’t draw it with pencil and paper,
you probably can’t paint it.

Most of the painting process is about “seeing” how you want objects to sit in space and rendering that. Clearly. Simply. Crafting your drawing clarifies the image for you in preparation for painting.

Working through your ideas for a painting, testing them, before you begin to paint will clarify your vision. Drawing can become an enjoyable part of your artistic process, something you embrace rather than avoid. If when you draw an image and the idea doesn’t seem to work, you find a new way to express it. You can explore ideas efficiently and enjoyably first without just picking up a brush and hoping for the best.

Then, just like artists throughout the centuries, you are using drawing to hone in on strong, dramatic compositions. When you start like that, with a good compositional sketch, your success rate will soar.

On each Thursday we have a live Zoom call where I review student images. Generally each week students have the same three or four issues. We discuss those and I then I will take Q&A. The call is recorded if you cannot make it.

Landscape also forces us to think in terms of foreground, middleground and background, where we want the viewer’s attention to go, and how to craft that as we move back into space.

All that makes it easier to learn composition with landscapes. But the insights and benefits will help you structure figure paintings. 

In week 5 you will start to use your own images, if you want, so then you can apply everything you have learned to figures. Or still lifes. Or abstract paintings.

If my first language is not English can I take the course? Do you have translations?

We have many students for whom English is a second language. All the videos have YouTube links with closed captioned translations. After you register, email us and tell us what language you need. 
Students also use a translation tool (such as Google Translate) to post and participate with other students.

Honor Your Artistic Expression

Many of my students have wanted to paint for years, but work and family obligations took up their time. Now, finally, they feel that this is their time to paint.

This desire to paint is important. You may have no idea where that deep, quiet calling comes from. Or why you want to paint.

After more than 40 years I still don’t know why I want to paint. I just know I want to do it.

Yet that desire calls you for a reason and I think it’s important to find a way to give expression to it.

Answering that call to express yourself artistically, honoring it with care and attention, may be one of the great things you can do for yourself. That at least is my experience.
